Magazine Publishing Internship

Design Internship

Enrollment in a print journalism or media design degree program is required.
Prior approval/verification for internship between NVPR and the College/University must be obtained.

This is an unpaid/for-credit-only Internship working for an NPR-affiliate broadcast and media organization that provides the Las Vegas Valley’s only City Regional publication, Desert Companion.

Only one Internship is available per semester; applicants must be working on a Computer Graphics Design degree and enroll in GRC 290B—Internship for Graphic Communications (3 credits) if selected.

For the design side of Desert Companion, the intern will:

Participate in key steps in the process of producing a city magazine. This will include administrative functions such as requesting art from publicists and organizing calendar information.
Assist the Art Director/Graphic Designer with designing Desert Companion magazine, designing and resizing ads and marketing materials for Nevada Public Radio.
Assist with the production of the magazine which includes, but not limited to, retouching and converting images, making changes to layout according to editor’s notes, producing print quality PDFs for the printer and uploading files to the printer.
Assist in brainstorming concepts for upcoming magazine layouts and projects.
Ability to communicate and interact with staff, clients, and tenants in a professional and courteous manner a MUST.
Assist with research and gathering of photographs and illustrations for the magazine, marketing materials and advertising
The intern should have an interest in art, design, photo journalism and publishing. Most importantly, he/she should be able to design and perform layout with clarity and flair—or be enthused to learn how.

Software the intern will be using:

Adobe Creative Suite 5, which includes InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Fireworks, Dreamweaver, Flash and Lightroom
Microsoft Word and Excel

Working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign highly recommended. Knowledge of Microsoft office products a plus.

Part of the internship is the completion of a final project encompassing the entire design-to-print process, from pitching an idea to layout, illustration, marketing and advertising the final product.

Time Commitment:

The intern would usually work three half days a week, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday.
The hours will generally be 9am to Noon or 1pm until 4pm with duration of 12-15 weeks (one semester) for at least 150 hours as required for 3 credit hours.

To be considered for this Internship:

The ideal student for this internship needs to have an interest in graphic design, with either professional or academic experience in these areas. Ability to communicate and interact with Desert Companion staff and clients is a must! The potential intern must complete an application and agreement of understanding and supply a résumé and cover letter expressing interest in the internship program with NVPR’s Desert Companion and a list of references, along with the degree requirement.

With great pleasure we at Circus Couture invite you to participate in our Silent and Live Art Auction.

Last year Circus Couture presented an art gallery which evolved into a world class avant guarde circus and fashion show at the Palms bringing over $100,000 of aid to the Children's Specialty Center of Nevada via the St. Baldrick's foundation to help children of our local community in their fight with cancer.

With over 740 guests in attendance, Circus Couture overwhelmed the Palm's expectation of our drive to make an event to remember. This year we are doing it again.

World Famous Celebrity Portrait Photographer to Speak at CSN

World famous celebrity portrait photographer, Harry Benson, will be speaking at CSN at 6pm, Wednesday, Nov. 17 in the Horn Theater on the Cheyenne Campus.

This event is FREE and open the general public.

To see Harry's work, visit his website www.harrybenson.com. He first came to our attention during the Beatles invasion of 1964 and has been photographing top politicians, events, musicians, actors, etc. every since. He is currently under contract with Vogue magazine, and his work frequently appears in Architectural Digest, Newsweek and many others.

This event is co-sponsored by Casey's Camera and Canon , who will be conducting FREE demonstrations throughout the day in our photo studios in the Telecommunications Building on the Cheyenne. Demos will include doing flash photography, digital printing and scanning, lenses and their applications, and demos on Canon camera bodies.

Fright Dome takes over The Adventuredome at Circus Circus beginning Friday, Oct. 1. For the second year,
Fright Dome will partner with Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures to theme two of its five haunted houses. Created from the mind of hauntrepreneur Jason Egan, Fright Dome at Circus Circus has been horrifying the masses since 2003. Egan’s 12 years in the industry and passion for all things terrifying culminate to make Fright Dome one of the top haunted attractions in the nation. Each year more than 60,000 people visit the popular attraction. Spread throughout five acres, this haunted theme park features dark, fog-filled attractions complete with ghoulish and gore-clad professional actors. Not appropriate for children under 12, Fright Dome includes roaming scare actors, high-powered strobes, multi-colored lasers and eerie sound effects. Fright Dome is open from 7 p.m. to midnight Oct. 1-31 on select nights.

Media Technologies Mourns the Loss of Its Chair

It is with great sadness we announce that Tom Myers, department chair of Media Technologies, passed away Thursday. His family will hold a private service and is establishing a scholarship for media technologies students in his name. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Tom Myers Memorial with the CSN Foundation.

William “Tom” Myers began working at CSN as a part-time instructor on January 16, 2001. Less than a year later, he was recruited into a full-time position. He was granted tenure and also elected department chair of media technologies on July 1, 2005.

The Department of Media Technologies is in the process of planning an event to celebrate Tom’s life. More information will be forthcoming as it is available.

Cartoonist/Illustrator Needed for Design Work

The character—called "A Man Alone"—gets into many different "situations" depicted in artwork that will be produced on shirts, pictures, keychains, etc.

Students With InDesign SkillsWanted for Part-time Job

Here is an opportunity for a GRC student who knows how to use InDesign.
The job is basically laying out manuals that has been translated into Spanish. No translation work is needed; it is pretty much a layout production job.

The pay range is $12-14/hr. for 3-4 days per week with schedule flexibility, but the standard company schedule will be M-F 8-5pm.

Graphic/Media Designer

The ideal candidate is a media technologies student who is interested in furthering their skills and building their portfolio. Projects may include video editing, website maintenance, graphic design, page layout, and general office/writing skills. Applicant must be independent and self-motivated along with creative and inspiring. Bring samples of work.

Job Description:

Knowledge and experience with design and editing tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, Dreamweaver, Final Cut Pro/imovie
Ability to produce brochures, posters, web graphics, newsletters, edit videos, and maintain website
Ensure all requests are well designed and completed by deadline
Work with department staff to develop innovative designs
Have understanding of various page layouts

Professional Skills:

Conduct one’s self in a professional manner
Must be able to follow supervisor’s directives
Work well in a team environment and be flexible in design strategies

The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC) has an immediate opening for a Graphics Intern. The ideal candidate must be:

Highly organized and able to work efficiently on multiple projects to meet tight deadlines
Able to implement quick revisions to match client's and Designer's requests
Proficient in InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop.
Familiar with both Macintosh and PC platforms
Skilled at proofing, pre-flighting, and preparing files for print.
Proficient at page layout and design.
Familiar with image compression, file correction, and optimization techniques.
Able to provide a portfolio for review.

GRC 207 Students' Impression Poster Exhibition

From March 5 until May 2010, students from Dan McElhattan III's GRC 207 class will have their Impression Poster Exhibition on display at Holsum Design Center.

On display is the work of 11 GRC students, created as the final project for McElhattan's Fall 2009 Electronic Design class.

This is a "great opportunity to promote the classes and connect the artists to our community through our exhibition," McElhattan said. "I hope you can make the time to view the posters."

The Holsum Building reflects the passion of one man’s vision to save a piece of Las Vegas History and infuse culture in a community that celebrates and embraces talent.

LaPour Partners, the building's owner, has graciously allowed the College of Southern Nevada (Cheyenne Campus) to display the works of 11 student-designer/artists from their final project entitled: IMPRESSION.

For the GRC 207 Electronic Design course of Spring 2009, the students were challenged with a tailored project for a greater cause. To design a poster that expresses their favorite quotation. The cause was to see if the talent at a local college can rise to the occasion and leave a lasting impression.

The direction for the students was to design a poster that they would be proud to purchase and hang in their homes—a design that would leave a lasting Impression for the audience viewing the design, McElhattan explained.

Their concept would not be graded as a final exam, but judged by leading business owners, patron of the arts, local photographers, entrepreneurs and managers of companies that embrace design as a marketing tool. A private invitation was sent to 35 judges to attend for review and critique the final posters.

"On these walls are those works of art from the due diligence of the future designers of our community," McElhattan said. Sponsors are UBC Enterprises, GoingGreen.com, JDYN Photography, Frazee Paint, Wendoh Media, Joey Galon, Larry Monterro, Ron & Karen Custer, Skyler Custer & Christian Sagum Mike Marion, M3AD.com, and Lola’s.

Two New Courses by McElhattan

New Offering Courses—GRC 198B

Brandmark
GRC 198B Sec. 005, [#25519]
T, 12–3:40pm, Cheyenne

Every business entity has a mark an identifier to instill a memorable transaction—a Brandmark?

This class will cover the differences between a lexicon, an avatar, a mark in identity creation. It is not a logo class.

The course is an exploration of identity from traditional type and marks into compositions that compel, communicate and stand out from the clutter of identity systems that are slowing becoming clip art in design and appearance.

Portfolio Accelerator and Job Preparation
GRC 198B Sec. 006, [#29596]
W, 6–9:40 pm, Cheyenne

This course is GRC 294B, accelerated; not your typical portfolio prep class.

Students will explore what a really portfolio is supposed to be, learning vital tools and skills to accelerate their portfolio for a memorable, impressionable tool.

All will be required to explore options of manufacturing / developing their own custom vehicle to showcase their talents and create, design and establish key elements for them to go after their dream position or project
